Kolkata, Jan 28 (NationPress) Two workers tragically lost their lives and three additional workers fell ill due to an accident at a gas excavation facility operated by a private company in the industrial town of Durgapur in West Bengal’s West Burdwan district on Tuesday.
The incident occurred when one of the deceased workers fell into a water-filled waste pit. In a bid to help his colleague, another worker also plunged into the pit.
The workers who lost their lives have been identified as Akash Badyakar (25) and Anup Sarkar (26). They were extracted from the pit and initially taken to a local hospital in critical condition. However, as their health declined, they were transferred to a private super-specialty hospital where they both succumbed.
Three additional workers who attempted the rescue became ill due to the toxic gas emitted from the waste pit and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Badyakar hailed from Kanksa in the same district, while Sarkar was from Malda district. Both were employed as contractual workers at the plant.
Local residents and fellow workers have criticized the plant management for inadequate safety measures, which they believe led to this tragic incident.
“There have been previous complaints from the workers regarding insufficient safety protocols, which the management completely ignored. They must now take accountability for the loss of these two workers,” stated a fellow employee.
In response, a spokesperson for the plant affirmed that the management will not evade responsibility following this tragic incident and will support the families of the deceased workers.
