A woman and her second husband were publicly humiliated in Harniyakheda village in Ujjain district, Madhya Pradesh, on Tuesday, after her former in-laws and a group of villagers launched a brutal mob attack that has since drawn widespread condemnation across the state. A video of the assault surfaced online on Thursday, triggering outrage and prompting swift police action.

What Happened

The woman, who had left her first husband three years ago and subsequently married another man, had returned to Harniyakheda with her spouse to resolve a land dispute. According to police officials, her arrival prompted her former father-in-law to mobilise villagers and orchestrate the assault.

The mob tore the woman's clothes, cut her hair, and forced her to wear a garland of shoes while parading her through the village. Her husband was also brutally assaulted during the attack. The incident reportedly occurred around midday, approximately 20 kilometres from the Jharda police station headquarters.

Police Response and Arrests

Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma confirmed that the accused belong to the woman's former marital family. A case has been registered against 11 individuals, including three women. Of these, six have been arrested — identified as Sumer Singh, Badrilal, Kachru, and three others — who were produced before a court and sent to judicial custody. Five accused remain at large, and police have intensified raids to apprehend them.

When police teams reached the spot after receiving information about the assault, panic spread among the villagers. Authorities have assured that the remaining fugitives will be apprehended shortly.

Bystanders Filmed Instead of Intervening

In a deeply troubling detail, many villagers present during the attack chose to record videos of the assault rather than intervene or alert authorities. It was one such video that went viral online, ultimately exposing the incident and drawing condemnation from across the country.

Police have since recorded the statements of both victims and are pursuing strict legal action against all those involved.

Background and Security Measures

The couple had settled in Indore after their marriage. Their return to Harniyakheda for a land-related matter is what reportedly triggered the former father-in-law's plan to gather villagers and carry out the attack. Given the tense atmosphere in the village following the incident, security has been significantly tightened to prevent further unrest.

This incident is among several recent cases of mob-driven public humiliation of women in rural Madhya Pradesh, raising renewed questions about social vigilantism and the enforcement of legal protections in remote villages. With five accused still at large, police have said the investigation is ongoing and further arrests are imminent.
