Dehradun, March 31 (NationPress) In a noteworthy initiative to honour distinguished individuals who have played a vital role in safeguarding India’s rich cultural heritage, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has declared the renaming of several sites across the districts of Haridwar, Dehradun, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar.

The Chief Minister stated that this renaming effort mirrors the sentiments of the public while celebrating Indian culture and heritage. In the Haridwar district, Aurangzebpur has been changed to Shivaji Nagar; Gajiwali is now Arya Nagar; Chandpur has become Jyotiba Phule Nagar; Mohammadpur Jat is now Mohanpur Jat; Khanpur Kursli has been renamed Ambedkar Nagar; Indrishpur is now Nandpur; Khanpur has become Shri Krishna Pur; and Akbarpur Fazalpur is now Vijayanagar.

In the Dehradun district, Miyanwala has been renamed Ramji Wala; Pirwala is now Kesari Nagar; Chandpur Khurd has been changed to Prithviraj Nagar; and Abdullah Nagar is now Daksh Nagar. In Nainital district, Nawabi Road has been rebranded as Atal Marg, while the stretch from Panchakki to ITI is now Guru Golwalkar Marg. In the Udham Singh Nagar district, the municipal council of Sultanpur Patti has been renamed Kaushalya Puri.

Additionally, in 2024, the state government fulfilled a long-standing request by officially reverting the mythological city Joshimath back to its historical name, Jyotirmath. This renaming signifies a cultural restoration effort and received strong support from local residents and various organizations during a ceremony in 2023.

Jyotirmath, known as the gateway to the Badrinath shrine, gained increased attention following the land subsidence disaster of early 2023, which amplified calls for the renaming. These initiatives showcase the government's dedication to aligning with cultural values and addressing community aspirations.

The name Joshimath was adopted before British colonialism and later appeared in official records. Over time, as administrative boundaries were established, Joshimath became common usage, although Jyotirmath retained its importance in religious contexts.
