Is the Union Budget Truly Disappointing for the Common Man?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Feb 1 (NationPress) The Congress National General Secretary and former Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Sachin Pilot, criticized the Union Budget unveiled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament, labeling it as directionless, perplexing, and profoundly unsatisfactory for the average citizen.
Pilot pointed out that despite the Union government reporting capital expenditure savings of close to Rs 1 lakh crore annually for the last three years, its attempts to garner praise through inflated budget allocations are transparent to the public.
He emphasized that the central government did not utilize nearly Rs 33,000 crore allocated for direct public benefit programs like the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Gramin, and the Skill Development Scheme, highlighting a lack of focus on the rural poor.
Furthermore, approximately Rs 50,000 crore under the Jal Jeevan Mission went unspent due to the Centre's failure to disburse funds to the states.
While the Centre has maintained the states' share in central taxes at 41 percent, it has not resolved the issue of states covering nearly 40 percent of the expenditures under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
Pilot urged for an increase in the states' share to 45 percent.
He described the budget as particularly disappointing for Rajasthan, noting the lack of funding in the Water Resources Ministry's budget for the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project, the exclusion of Rajasthan from all seven proposed high-speed rail corridors, and the absence of provisions for previously sanctioned railway lines, indicating that the BJP government lacks empathy for the state's residents.
Additionally, he asserted that the budget provides no relief for farmers and called on the BJP-led state government to release a white paper on unemployment.
Pilot cautioned that this budget will exacerbate unemployment, pushing educated and highly skilled youth into menial jobs.
