Lucknow, April 5 (NationPress) In a groundbreaking move towards enhancing women's empowerment, the government of Uttar Pradesh has introduced an innovative initiative called the 'Safe Mobility Program'. This scheme is primarily focused on creating job opportunities for female members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

This program is training a cohort of female e-rickshaw drivers throughout the state, ensuring that women and girls have safe, accessible, and dignified travel options to schools, workplaces, and other critical locations.

Initially, 1,000 e-rickshaws are being allocated to women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The service is already operational in the districts of Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Kaushambi, and Jhansi, with plans to expand to additional districts including Lucknow, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Bhadohi, Sonbhadra, Deoria, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Sitapur soon.

This initiative by the Yogi administration is particularly important as it directly addresses issues of women's safety and security. In rural settings, the e-rickshaw service—exclusively managed by female drivers—proves to be a substantial solution for ensuring the safety and mobility of women and girls.

Implemented under the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihoods Mission with support from 'Development Alternatives', this program has already shown remarkable outcomes.

In the five targeted districts, 119 women have been empowered as entrepreneurs due to the introduction of e-rickshaws. Additionally, 629 women have received training in operations, and 244 women have obtained driving licenses.

Through this initiative, these women are not just operating vehicles; they are also becoming significant economic contributors to their families. The average annual income of women participating in this program has surpassed Rs 3 lakh, further demonstrating the success of this model.

The implications of the 'Safe Mobility' initiative extend beyond transportation. It is poised to improve access to education for girls, ensure safer travel for working women, generate new job opportunities in rural areas, and empower women in Self-Help Groups to achieve new levels of self-sufficiency.

Point of View

The initiative addresses critical issues of safety and economic opportunity, showcasing a commitment to improving the lives of women in the state.
