Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, March 28 (NationPress) Punjab's Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, has urgently appealed to the Government of India to secure a steady and sufficient supply of petrol, diesel, and DAP fertiliser as the state prepares for an anticipated wheat harvest of 140 lakh metric tonnes (LMT). He cautioned that any interruptions in fuel supply could pose a direct threat to the nation's food security.
While assuring that there is currently no shortage and no need for panic, the Chief Minister emphasized the necessity of prompt action from the Centre to facilitate smooth harvesting operations and grain transportation. Punjab is poised with 181 LMT of wheat and 139 LMT of paddy to contribute to the nation's food supply.
During a recent virtual conference with the Prime Minister, CM Mann conveyed that Punjab is expected to yield 140 LMT of wheat this year.
"To guarantee efficient harvesting and transport of crops, a consistent supply of petrol and diesel is essential. A multitude of tractors, trolleys, harvesters, and trucks will be deployed for harvesting, thus an increased fuel supply is crucial for the greater public good. It is imperative to maintain the food security of the country by all possible means,” he stated.
Reassuring the citizens, the Chief Minister noted that there is no reason for alarm.
"Currently, the state maintains a stock of 12–14 days of petrol and diesel and six days of LPG. This stock is consistently sustained throughout the year and is being replenished without interruption. The country has established import agreements with 41 nations, ensuring that 60 days of petrol and diesel stock and 30 days of LPG stock are secured at the national level. There is no necessity for hoarding or panic buying, as the Chief Secretary is vigilantly monitoring supplies. Hoarders and black marketers will be addressed with utmost seriousness,” he added.
Providing operational updates, he mentioned, "As of Thursday, 71,000 requests for LPG refills were logged, with 69,000 already fulfilled. There are no indications of a lockdown in the state, and operations are proceeding smoothly. A total of 1,497 inspections were carried out, leading to the seizure of 301 LPG cylinders.”
Additionally, he assured, “The Punjab government is dedicated to ensuring that both agriculture and industry face no disruptions. A helpline number -- 0172-3321001 -- has been set up for issues related to LPG, petrol, and diesel.”
Highlighting the state's contribution to national food security, the Chief Minister remarked, “In light of the current situation, Punjab is prepared to provide 41 LMT of wheat currently stored in its warehouses, along with the projected 140 LMT this year and 139 LMT of paddy to serve the populace across the country. The state has a longstanding tradition of aiding the needy. Should the country require this 181 LMT of wheat and 139 LMT of paddy, it can be dispatched at any time. Punjab will continue its proud legacy of supporting the nation during this critical time, leaving no stone unturned for this noble endeavor.”
He also commended the Centre's decision regarding fuel pricing, stating, “The Government of India's choice to lower additional taxes on petrol and diesel is a reassuring move.”
