Chandigarh, April 30 (NationPress) As wheat procurement in Punjab nears a historic high of 124 lakh metric tons (LMT), the process has been progressing swiftly across the state. So far, 114 LMT of wheat has been received, with 111 LMT already procured.
During a media briefing, Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak announced that the total procurement by government agencies has surpassed 100 LMT, currently at 103 LMT.
Regarding payments to farmers, the minister stated that approximately Rs 22,815 crore has been credited to their accounts, with 628,674 farmers having delivered their produce to the mandis.
The lifting of wheat is also accelerating, with 47.37 lakh metric tons already lifted, representing 56.6% compliance with the 72-hour norms.
To facilitate smooth procurement, a total of 2,885 procurement centres have been set up in Punjab, including 1,864 regular and 1,021 temporary centres.
The minister emphasized the exceptional yield this season, contributing to a bumper crop in Punjab, significantly aiding in meeting the 124 LMT target.
Further sharing insights, Kataruchak mentioned his regular visits to mandis across the state, noting that no farmers have raised complaints regarding the arrangements.
Essential facilities such as bardana, adequate sanitation, drinking water, and wooden crates have been ensured at these centres.
