Uttarakhand Government Welcomes Five New Ministers in Cabinet Expansion
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dehradun, March 20 (NationPress) The Cabinet of Uttarakhand, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, saw its expansion on Friday with the appointment of five new ministers. The oath-taking ceremony took place at Lok Bhavan, where Governor Gurmit Singh officiated the event.
The newly inducted ministers are BJP MLAs: Khajan Das from Rajpur Road Assembly, Madan Kaushik from Haridwar, Pradeep Batra from Roorkee, Bharat Chaudhary from Rudraprayag, and Ram Singh Kaira from Bhimtal.
This cabinet expansion follows months of speculation, as five ministerial positions had been unoccupied in the state government. With this latest move, the Dhami administration is inching closer to achieving the constitutionally mandated strength of 12 ministers within the cabinet.
When the BJP reclaimed power in Uttarakhand in 2022, Dhami took the oath alongside eight ministers. However, the cabinet's numbers dwindled due to unforeseen circumstances. This was reduced to eight after the passing of Social Welfare and Transport Minister Chandan Ramdas in April 2023, and further to seven following the resignation of Prem Chand Agarwal, who previously managed the Finance and Parliamentary Affairs portfolios, last year.
Over the last four years, there had been numerous discussions regarding cabinet expansion, but no concrete decisions were made until this point. The recent reshuffle is being perceived as a crucial political maneuver ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
Party officials had earlier suggested that talks were in progress with the central leadership regarding the expansion. Uttarakhand BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan indicated that this process is part of standard governance and necessitates alignment with the party's central command.
He also stressed that the Dhami government remains dedicated to development, public welfare, and effective governance. According to him, discussions with the central leadership have facilitated the process of appointing new ministers.
The inclusion of these new ministers is anticipated to bolster the operational effectiveness of the state government and improve administrative efficiency as Uttarakhand gears up for forthcoming political challenges leading to the 2027 Assembly elections.
