Allegations of Backdoor Appointments in Kerala Police: Venugopal Calls Out Bodybuilders’ Recruitment
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, March 13 (NationPress) - K.C. Venugopal, a Member of Parliament and the General Secretary of the Indian National Congress, has accused the Kerala government of engaging in dubious backdoor appointments for the role of police Inspector. He claims that individuals with bodybuilding backgrounds, closely associated with the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), have been unjustly appointed, breaching established recruitment standards.
Venugopal stated that this action represents a direct affront to the job-seeking youth of Kerala, who dedicate years to prepare for competitive exams organized by the Kerala Public Service Commission.
He emphasized that bodybuilding is not acknowledged as a sport eligible for recruitment under the sports quota.
Furthermore, there is a specific directive stating that the post of police Inspector should not be filled via direct sports quota appointments. Yet, the government allegedly circumvented these regulations to facilitate these appointments.
Venugopal raised concerns regarding the age of the appointees, noting that the maximum allowable age for police recruitment is 25 years, while the individuals involved are reported to be 40 and 38 years old.
“Those who shout slogans for the CPI-M can seemingly obtain direct appointments without undergoing a written test, interview, or physical fitness evaluation. Meanwhile, those who diligently study and pass exams are left jobless even after protesting outside the Secretariat,” he remarked.
Venugopal claimed that the Cabinet had earlier resolved in January of the previous year to appoint these individuals directly, but the plan turned controversial.
After facing backlash, a physical fitness test was conducted, during which one candidate allegedly failed. However, after submitting an application, the government reportedly instructed the head of the Kerala Police to appoint him without conducting another test.
He asserted that the directive was hastily issued as the government’s term nears its conclusion.
The Congress leader also claimed that over two lakh backdoor appointments have occurred in the last decade, with numerous leaders from the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and their spouses securing significant positions.
He cautioned that such appointments could be legitimized if the current government remains in power, asserting that a government led by the United Democratic Front would investigate all alleged illegal appointments and ensure justice for the unemployed youth.
