This election aims to fill the vacancy in the Vice President's role, following a notice issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on July 22. The newly elected Vice President will serve a complete five-year term starting from the date they assume office.
According to the ECI's provided schedule, the notification for the election will be released on August 7, with the final date for nominations being August 21. The scrutiny of nominations is set for August 22, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until August 25. Polling will occur on September 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with counting taking place the same day, if necessary.
The Vice President is elected by an electoral college made up of members from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The 2025 electoral college consists of 788 members, including 233 elected (with five seats currently vacant in the Upper House) and 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, as well as 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha (with one seat vacant in the Lower House).
