New Delhi, March 19 (NationPress) Vikram K Doraiswami, who currently holds the position of High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, has been designated as the new Ambassador of India to the People's Republic of China, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday.
A member of the 1992 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, Doraiswami is anticipated to assume his new role in the near future.
He began his tenure as High Commissioner to the UK in August 2022 following his previous service as the High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
After completing his in-service training in New Delhi from 1992-1993, he was assigned to the Indian Commission in Hong Kong in May 1994, serving as Third Secretary. During this time, he studied Chinese, obtaining an elective diploma at the New Asia Yale-in-Asia language school at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He then served at the Embassy of India in Beijing from September 1996 for almost four years.
Doraiswami held a position at the Prime Minister’s Office in 2002, later acting as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of India. In 2006, he was appointed as Political Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York.
In October 2009, he transitioned to the role of India's Consul General in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The MEA reports that Doraiswami returned to New Delhi in July 2011, where he took charge as Head of the SAARC Division, a position he maintained until October 2012. During this time, he also coordinated the Fourth BRICS Summit held in New Delhi in March 2012.
An experienced diplomat, he served as Joint Secretary of the Americas Division at the MEA from October 2012 to October 2014. He became the Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan at the end of October 2014 and later took up the role of Ambassador to South Korea in April 2015.
Currently, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, who has been part of the Indian Foreign Service since 1990, serves as India's Ambassador to China. Ambassador Rawat also opted for Mandarin Chinese as his foreign language and has worked in Hong Kong and Beijing between 1992 and 1997.
Ambassador Rawat started his second term in Beijing in 2003 as Counsellor and concluded it in 2007 as Deputy Chief of Mission. He was appointed as India's Ambassador to China in December 2021.
