Visionary Leader Remembered: PM Modi Honors Former US President Jimmy Carter

New Delhi, Dec 30 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday conveyed his heartfelt condolences following the demise of former US President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday.
In a message on X, PM Modi remarked, "I am profoundly saddened by the loss of former USA President Mr. Jimmy Carter. A statesman with remarkable vision, he dedicated his life to the pursuit of global peace and harmony."
"His efforts in strengthening India-US relations have created a lasting legacy. My sincere condolences go out to his family, friends, and the citizens of the US," he further stated.
Carter died at the age of 100 in his residence in Plains, Georgia.
He holds the title of the oldest living President in history and was the third US President to travel to India.
He had been battling an aggressive form of melanoma, a type of skin cancer, which had metastasized to his liver and brain. He had ceased medical treatment and was receiving hospice care at his home.
President Carter, a member of the Democratic Party, served one term from 1977 to 1981 and was ousted from office despite significant achievements such as the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, which could not overshadow the economic downturn and the Iran crisis.
After his presidency, he led a remarkable life and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his "decades of unwavering efforts to achieve peaceful resolutions to international conflicts, to foster democracy and human rights, and to encourage economic and social development," as noted in the prize citation.
Carter was the third US President to visit India, following Dwight Eisenhower in 1959 and Richard Nixon in 1969.
During his 1978 visit, he was accompanied by First Lady Rosalyn Carter, who sadly passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96.
He met with then-President Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy and Prime Minister Morarji Desai, addressing the Parliament during his visit. A village he visited in Gurugram (formerly Gurgaon) was named Carterpuri in his honor and retains that name to this day.
