Vijayawada, Feb 25 (NationPress) A local court on Tuesday prolonged the judicial custody of YSR Congress Party leader and former MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan in a case involving kidnap and SC/ST Atrocities until March 11.
Vamsi Mohan, currently held in Vijayawada sub-jail, appeared virtually before the SC/ST court as his custody was set to expire on Tuesday.
In a recent development, police took Vamsi into custody from the jail for further questioning, just a day after the court granted a three-day police remand.
Following a medical check-up, Vamsi will be escorted to the police station for interrogation regarding the case.
He was apprehended in Hyderabad by a police team on February 13 and subsequently brought to Vijayawada, where he was presented before the court after an extensive interrogation lasting over eight hours.
Along with Vamsi, his associates A. Shivarama Krishna Prasad and Nimma Lakshmipati have also been remanded to judicial custody.
Charges filed against Vamsi include violations under the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 140 (1) (kidnap), 308, 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, for the alleged kidnapping of a computer operator at the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) office in Gannavaram.
According to the police remand report, Vamsi was instrumental in threatening the computer operator, Satyavardhan, who complied with Vamsi's aides due to intimidation and death threats.
Furthermore, Vamsi is identified as accused number 71 in a case related to the attack on the TDP office in Gannavaram in 2023 while the YSRCP was in governance.
Satyavardhan, the complainant in the TDP office attack case, had recently appeared before a special court handling SC/ST Atrocity cases, submitting an affidavit stating he had no connection to the case.
Later, family members of Satyavardhan reported to the police that he had been kidnapped and coerced into providing false testimony regarding the TDP office attack, prompting the police to register a case against Vamsi Mohan and others.
Vamsi Mohan is implicated in multiple other cases filed post the TDP-led coalition’s assumption of power in June of the previous year.
On February 18, YSRCP president and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy visited Vamsi in jail, claiming that Vamsi was charged on fabricated allegations by the coalition government as an act of political revenge.
Having switched from the TDP to the YSRCP in 2020, Vamsi has been a vocal critic of the TDP and the current Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
