Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Threatens Action Over Zirwal Video Controversy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 27 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis issued a warning on Friday regarding potential action if an alleged video featuring Narhari Zirwal, the Food and Drug Administration Minister and a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, is confirmed to be genuine.
This declaration by the Chief Minister follows the opposition's demands for Zirwal's resignation, which has significantly intensified the political tension.
Fadnavis informed reporters, “Should this video prove to be authentic, appropriate measures will be initiated.” He mentioned that Zirwal had reached out to him personally after the video's emergence.
In his conversation with Fadnavis, Zirwal alleged that the video had been fabricated by merging several clips, asserting the necessity for an investigation into the matter.
Fadnavis suggested that Zirwal submit a formal complaint to enable verification of the video.
“We aim to uncover the complete truth surrounding this issue. Based on the investigation's results, I, along with his party leader Sunetra Pawar, will determine the next steps,” he added.
Previously, Zirwal faced scrutiny when a clerk in his office was implicated in a bribery scandal.
Fadnavis noted, “In that prior situation, a thorough investigation was conducted, revealing no connection to Narhari Zirwal. However, the current videos are of serious concern, and their authenticity must be confirmed. If they are real, action will follow.”
The opposition has mounted a fierce critique following the spread of the purported video involving Zirwal and a trans woman.
Critics assert that the individual depicted in the video is indeed Zirwal and are urging his immediate resignation from the cabinet.
While Zirwal has communicated with the Chief Minister, an official statement from him is still pending.
Similarly, no official comments have been released from Deputy Chief Minister and NCP national president Sunetra Pawar or the party regarding the ongoing situation.
Zirwal represents the Dindori constituency in Nashik district as a member of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
Reports indicate that the viral video may date back seven months.
