New Delhi, Dec 29 (NationPress) The government has announced that over 150 unique products from the northeastern region are set to receive Geographical Indication (GI) tagging within the next two years. This initiative aims to enhance the recognition and preservation of these products' unique identities.
Led by the Ministry of Development of North-East Region (MDoNER), the GI tagging effort focuses on promoting the distinctive local offerings in sectors such as Agri-Horti, Handloom, and Handicraft.
Additionally, the Ministry has allocated funds for establishing the North East Science and Technology Cluster at IIT Guwahati, with an investment of Rs 22.98 crore aimed at fostering Research, Innovation, and Skill Development in the northeast.
This cluster will feature an Innovation Hub for grassroots initiatives, a Technology Hub focusing on Semiconductor and Artificial Intelligence, and a Centre for Excellence concentrating on bamboo-based technology and biodegradable, eco-friendly plastics, all to enhance entrepreneurship, skill development, and innovation in the region.
The northeastern states contribute nearly 96% of India's agarwood production, and the country's annual export quota for agarwood has been increased sixfold. The Ministry is currently considering an integrated proposal to develop agarwood clusters in Golaghat (Assam) and Kadamtala (Tripura).
Efforts are also underway to strengthen Traditional Bamboo Artisan Clusters, aiming to enhance market access, create digital linkages, and provide sustainable livelihoods for artisans. The plan includes integrating over 4,000 artisans into formal markets and upgrading 15 Common Facility Centres (CFCs).
The Ministry has also facilitated the establishment of procurement units in Karbi Anglong (Assam) and Mokokchung (Nagaland) to develop value-added bamboo-engineered products.
The northeastern region is poised to play a crucial role in India's vision of achieving a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.
The Rising North East Investors Summit, held in May in New Delhi, attracted major corporate entities, foreign investors, and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), resulting in an investment interest amounting to Rs 4.48 lakh crore.
