New Delhi, April 6 (NationPress) - The Indian government announced on Monday that there are currently 16 vessels flying the Indian flag, manned by 433 Indian seafarers, still present in the western region of the Persian Gulf. In the last 48 hours, two LPG carriers, Green Sanvi and Green Asha, successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz.
The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) is actively overseeing the situation in close collaboration with ship owners, RPSL agencies, and Indian diplomatic missions, as stated in an official release following an inter-ministerial meeting focused on West Asia.
According to the statement, DG Shipping has enabled the safe return of over 1,599 Indian seafarers thus far, including 120 within the last 24 hours from various regional airports across the Gulf.
Simultaneously, port activities throughout India are functioning normally, with no signs of congestion reported. The State Maritime Boards of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry have confirmed seamless operations.
The Embassy of India in Tehran has successfully assisted 1,777 Indian nationals in their transit from Iran to Armenia and Azerbaijan, facilitating their return to India. This group includes 895 students and 345 fishermen; the latter group arrived in Chennai from Armenia on April 4, 2026. Additionally, the Embassy has aided in the transit of two foreign nationals: one from Bangladesh and another from Sri Lanka.
Out of those evacuated, 1,545 individuals entered Armenia, while 234 crossed into Azerbaijan. The Indian government has expressed gratitude to the governments of Iran, Armenia, and Azerbaijan for their cooperation in ensuring the safety of evacuees.
The Ministry of External Affairs is closely tracking the ongoing developments in the Gulf and West Asia, prioritizing the safety and welfare of the Indian community.
Since February 28, approximately 730,000 passengers have traveled from the conflict-affected region back to India.
In the UAE, airlines are operating a limited number of non-scheduled flights based on safety protocols, with around 90 flights anticipated to India today. Flights are also continuing from Saudi Arabia and Oman to multiple destinations across India.
