Over 4,300 Flights Canceled by Indian Airlines Amid West Asia Tensions: Government Update
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) The Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, reported to the Lok Sabha on Monday that a significant number of flights have been cancelled by both Indian and international airlines due to the escalating tensions in West Asia.
During the sixth day of the current Parliamentary Budget Session, the minister stated that Indian airlines have called off over 4,335 flights, while foreign carriers have suspended approximately 1,187 flights as a result of the ongoing crisis.
Naidu emphasized that ensuring passenger safety is the government’s foremost concern, which is reflected in the decisions made by airlines.
He clarified that flights cannot operate when the airspace over conflict zones is closed. “Indian carriers have cancelled 4,335 flights and foreign carriers have cancelled up to 1,187 flights. Safety is our top priority. If the airspace is closed, we cannot operate in that area,” he articulated.
Despite the disruptions, the minister mentioned that a considerable number of individuals have continued to travel during this tumultuous period.
“Approximately 219,780 passengers have travelled even while tensions were heightened in the region,” he noted.
Naidu also informed that India’s aviation authority, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, along with the aviation ministry, are maintaining regular communication with authorities in the impacted regions to keep a close watch on developments.
He added that normal flight operations will only resume once the airspace is reopened, highlighting that several areas are still under restrictions due to the ongoing unrest.
In a related discussion last week, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, revealed that India currently employs over 11,000 pilots in major domestic airlines, with nearly 1,900 female pilots.
In a written response to questions posed in the Lok Sabha on March 12, Mohol mentioned that Indian airlines collectively employ 11,394 pilots, including 1,871 female pilots.
