Seoul, Dec 10 (NationPress) South Korea's Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo convened with Gourangalal Das, the newly appointed Indian Ambassador to South Korea, on Wednesday to explore avenues for boosting bilateral economic and trade cooperation, as reported by officials.
The discussions led to a mutual consensus on enhancing the groundwork for expanding economic ties through the improvement of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Both parties committed to staying in close contact with the aim of reviving negotiations for CEPA upgrades promptly, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Yeo urged India to assist South Korean businesses operating within its borders, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by non-tariff barriers. Presently, over 670 Korean companies, including Hyundai Motor Co. and LG Electronics Inc., are active in India.
"India is a pivotal nation in the region and one of our most essential economic allies. I am optimistic that our two countries will strengthen their cooperation, yielding new economic accomplishments in sectors such as shipbuilding, critical minerals, and other high-potential industries," stated Yeo.
In reply, Das affirmed his dedication to actively promoting deeper economic and trade collaboration throughout his tenure, according to the ministry.
Last month, President Lee Jae Myung held a series of discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, to explore bilateral cooperation, as noted by the presidential office.
During his engagement with PM Modi, Lee expressed his aspirations for enhanced collaboration in areas encompassing economy, culture, security, and people-to-people exchanges, as stated by the office.
PM Modi acknowledged South Korea's advanced capabilities in shipbuilding and proposed a cooperative framework focused on future-oriented sectors, including the defense industry.
"The two leaders concurred on the necessity to amplify bilateral cooperation across diverse sectors such as artificial intelligence and the defense industry, and to initiate working-level consultations," the office revealed in a release.
During their discussions, PM Modi extended an invitation to Lee to visit India, with Lee expressing his eagerness to travel to India to further enhance bilateral relations, the office stated.
