Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Cardiff, April 7 (NationPress) The celebrated Welsh footballer and former Arsenal midfielder, Aaron Ramsey, has officially announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday, signaling the end of a remarkable career. Ramsey is regarded as one of the greatest players in Wales' history, having netted 21 goals across 86 appearances and represented his nation in three significant tournaments.
He was instrumental in leading Wales to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, where he earned a spot in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) team of the tournament.
“Making this decision has been incredibly tough. After much thought, I have chosen to step away from football,” Ramsey stated in his announcement.
“I want to begin by expressing my gratitude to Wales. It has been an honor to don the Welsh jersey and to share so many unforgettable moments. None of this would have been achievable without the significant contributions of all the managers I’ve worked with and the staff who have supported me in numerous ways,” he continued.
Ramsey also conveyed his appreciation to his former club, Arsenal, where he dedicated 11 years of his career. During his tenure, he secured three FA Cups, scoring the decisive goal in two of those finals.
“To the Red Wall, you have stood by us through every challenge! You have celebrated our victories and consoled us during defeats, playing an essential role in our achievements. I am immensely grateful. It has been a privilege to represent you. Diolch,” he expressed.
At 35 years old, Ramsey has been without a club since departing from Mexican side Pumas in December, having not played since September. He aspired to compete for Wales in the FIFA World Cup, but the team’s loss to Bosnia in the qualifiers dashed those dreams.
“I appreciate all the clubs I’ve had the fortune to represent. Thank you to all the managers and staff who have helped me pursue my dream and play at the highest level,” he remarked.
“And a heartfelt thank you to my wife, children, and family. Your unwavering support made this journey possible,” he concluded.
