Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Faridabad, Feb 26 (NationPress) In a remarkable display of skill, Abhishek Kumar achieved a tournament record low score of a stunning bogey-free eight-under 64 during the final round. This exceptional performance secured him a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the opening leg of the INR 25 lakh DP World PGTI NexGen 2026 at the Aravalli Golf Club in Faridabad, Haryana, on Thursday.
The talented 24-year-old from Panchkula, Abhishek Kumar (72-73-64), entered the last round tied for 10th place, trailing by eight strokes. He demonstrated remarkable prowess with eight birdies, including five consecutive ones, finishing the tournament with a total score of seven-under 209, marking his inaugural professional win.
Overnight leader, Aditya Raj Singh Chahal (69-68-74), who held a five-shot lead, struggled with a 74 in the third round, landing him in second place with a total of five-under 211. Jujhar Singh (72) secured third place with a score of two-under 214.
Abhishek showcased his skill by hitting the edge of the green with his tee shots on four occasions on the Par-4 holes, setting up crucial birdies. His precision with iron shots and wedges kept him near the pins. Following an early birdie on the second hole, he executed five consecutive birdies from the seventh to the eleventh, finishing with two additional birdies on the 16th and 17th holes.
Chahal, once leading, managed an eagle and a birdie but faltered with a bogey and two double-bogeys, diminishing his chances.
Reflecting on his performance, Abhishek stated, “I aimed to shoot five-under to stay in contention. However, after my streak of five consecutive birdies and a critical par save on the 12th, my confidence surged, giving me a solid chance to win. After birdies on 16 and 17, I knew a par on 18 would clinch it, and I executed that successfully. My driving, iron play, and chipping were exceptional.”
“This win, especially after my disappointing performance at the DP World PGTI Qualifying School in January, has greatly boosted my self-confidence. I extend my gratitude to my sponsor, Tushar Narang, for his unwavering support,” he added.
