London, July 6 (NationPress) Arsenal has officially acquired Spanish midfielder Martin Zubamendi on a long-term contract from La Liga club Real Sociedad. He seamlessly integrates into Mikel Arteta's midfield following the exits of Thomas Partey and Jorginho.
According to The Athletic, the transfer fee for Zubamendi was set at 65 million euros, exceeding his release clause. Arsenal and Sociedad reached an agreement that permits the Gunners to pay in installments rather than a lump sum. Additionally, the completion of the deal was timed post-July 1 upon Sociedad's request for accounting reasons.
“This marks a monumental moment in my career. It’s the opportunity I was eagerly pursuing. Upon arrival, it’s clear how significant this club and its team are. I chose Arsenal because their playing style aligns perfectly with my strengths. They have demonstrated remarkable potential recently, and I believe the best is yet to come,” Zubamendi expressed in a statement.
The 26-year-old joins Arsenal after making 236 appearances in all competitions for Real Sociedad, where he developed through the club’s academy. He played a key role in securing the delayed 2019/20 Copa del Rey title against local rivals Athletic Club in April 2021, alongside current Arsenal player Mikel Merino.
During the 2022/23 season, Zubamendi was a pivotal figure as Real Sociedad achieved their highest league finish in a decade, concluding the season in fourth place and qualifying for Champions League football.
As a Spanish international, Zubamendi played all five matches during the 2020 Olympic Games, helping Spain win a silver medal in Tokyo. He has made 19 senior appearances for La Roja, winning the 2023 UEFA Nations League and contributing to Spain's victory over England in the Euro 2024 final.
“Martin is a player who will add immense quality and football intelligence to our squad. He is a great fit and possesses all the qualities to become an essential player for us. The level at which he has consistently performed for both club and country is precisely why we are thrilled to welcome him. We extend a warm welcome to Martin and his family,” stated Arteta.
Zubamendi is Arsenal's second acquisition this season, following the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea.
