Ahmedabad, March 26 (NationPress) India’s leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals, Arshdeep Singh, addressed the recent high-scoring phenomenon following his team’s, Punjab Kings, narrow 11-run win against the Gujarat Titans during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Despite accumulating 243 runs in the first innings, Gujarat nearly matched that with 232 runs in their response, even though they faced challenges maintaining a steady scoring rate throughout.
Arshdeep, who emerged as the top wicket-taker for his team with two crucial dismissals, including Sai Sudharsan and Sherfane Rutherford, asserted that there are effectively no longer any par scores in this format. He also commended Impact Substitute Vijaykumar Vyshak for his ability to effectively deliver wide yorkers under pressure, which helped his team maintain control.
“The strategy was straightforward - compel them to target the off-side; it’s difficult to hit well there. If they manage a good shot, acknowledge it and move on,” noted Arshdeep.
“I’m really pleased for him (Vyshak); he has been diligently practicing, and his execution of yorkers was commendable during the match. It’s better to miss on the wider side rather than the stumps. Even if it’s a full toss, it’s tough for them to hit because it’s out of reach,” he added.
“Kudos to all the batters who came in and attacked from the first ball. That’s the nature of this format now. There’s no real par score; whether it’s 240, 250, or 260, just score as much as you can and then aim to defend it,” Arshdeep stated during the post-match interview.
Captain Shreyas Iyer, in his inaugural game with his new franchise, achieved a remarkable strike rate of 230.95, scoring an unbeaten 97 which included nine sixes and five boundaries. He expressed his satisfaction with the performance, noting that excelling in the opening game is always the ‘icing on the cake.’
“I’m absolutely ecstatic. Scoring 97 not out in the first match is truly the icing on the cake. There’s no better feeling. It was crucial for me to adapt quickly. Getting four off the first ball provided a huge boost, and that flicked six off Rabada shifted the momentum,” Iyer shared.
“There was noticeable bounce as well. We managed to adapt swiftly. The 44 runs Shashank scored off 16 or 17 balls were significant. With the dew factor, we anticipated changes in the game. Thankfully, we executed our plans well,” Iyer concluded.
