Will Cameron Green's Rs 25.2 Cr Bid from KKR Really Yield Rs 18 Crore?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 16 (NationPress) Despite Cameron Green becoming the most expensive international acquisition in the history of the Indian Premier League with a remarkable bid of Rs 25.20 crore from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the Australian all-rounder will receive only Rs 18 crore due to the newly implemented "maximum fee" regulation.
This rule was put in place last year to tackle the common concern among franchises that certain overseas players were registering solely for mini auctions to take advantage of the supply-demand disparity.
As per the regulation, the maximum payment for an overseas player is capped at Rs 18 crore, which corresponds to the highest retention price for franchises before the mega auction in 2025. If any bids surpass the Rs 18-crore limit, the additional funds will be allocated by the BCCI for player welfare initiatives.
In a communication to franchises last year, the IPL specified, "Any overseas player's auction fee at minor auctions will be lower than the highest retention price of Rs 18 crore and the highest auction price at the major auction. For instance, if the highest auction price at the major auction is Rs 20 crore, then Rs 18 crore will be the cap. Conversely, if the highest auction price at the major auction is Rs 16 crore, then the cap will be Rs 16 crore."
Due to a registration error by his manager, Green was registered as a batter, surpassing the previous record held by his Australian teammate Mitchell Starc, who was acquired by KKR for Rs 24.75 crore in the IPL 2024 auction.
He now ranks as the third most expensive player in IPL auction history, following Rishabh Pant (who fetched Rs 27 crore from Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2025 mega auction) and Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer (who was sold for Rs 26.75 crore in the IPL 2025 auction).
Green made his IPL debut during the 2023 season after being acquired by the Mumbai Indians (MI) for Rs 17.5 crore, making him the second-most expensive overseas player in IPL auction history at that time, as well as the priciest Australian player.
Recently, he played for RCB in IPL 2024 after transferring from MI, scoring 255 runs across 12 innings at a strike rate of 143.25 and taking 10 wickets in 13 matches with an economy rate of 8.61.
