New Jersey, July 9 (NationPress) Chelsea's head coach Enzo Maresca expressed his pride in Joao Pedro, the club's recent acquisition, following the team's advancement to the FIFA Club World Cup final after securing a 2-0 victory against Fluminense on Wednesday (IST).
"The past few years have not reflected the true potential of this club, but fortunately, this year has been quite positive, and we find ourselves in the final," Maresca remarked. "We are immensely proud to assist the team in reclaiming its rightful place."
"We are thrilled and proud to reach the final this Sunday, especially as it marks the inaugural edition of the (revamped) Club World Cup featuring the world's elite clubs," the Italian coach added.
Pedro, who made his first start for Chelsea after joining from Brighton & Hove Albion last week, made an instant impression. The 23-year-old Brazilian striker netted two goals, one before and one after halftime at MetLife Stadium near New York City, according to Xinhua.
"I'm very pleased for Joao. He possesses the talent to influence matches like today's," Maresca stated. "We understood Joao's capabilities. We signed him because this season we've faced numerous teams employing defensive tactics, and his skills are particularly effective against such challenges."
Out of respect for Fluminense, where he began his professional journey, Pedro opted not to celebrate his goals.
"They provided me with everything during my early years, guiding me into the professional world, and I am grateful to them. However, this is my job now. I feel sorry for them, but professionalism comes first," said Pedro, who was named player of the match.
Fluminense's coach Renato Gaucho acknowledged Chelsea's well-earned victory but expressed pride in his team's efforts, which marked the end of South America's participation in the tournament.
"Fluminense has had a stellar journey, and we have played a role in reinstating respect for Brazilian football," Gaucho commented. "We triumphed over several formidable teams along the way. Although we are out, we exit with our heads held high."
