Sunit Chowrasia of Kolkata completed a historic hat-trick of victories on the DP World PGTI NexGen Tour, clinching the inaugural INR 25 lakh DP World PGTI NexGen – Varanasi at the BLW Greens Golf Course in Varanasi on Thursday, 18 June. Chowrasia finished the week at six-under 204, winning by four shots despite a final-round three-over 73, to become the first player in NexGen Tour history to win three consecutive events.

Historic Achievement on the NexGen Tour

The Varanasi victory follows Chowrasia's triumphs at the Alpha Sports Academy Golf Championship hosted by Patna Golf Club in March and last week's Vijay Kumar Memorial in Lucknow. In doing so, he equalled Mani Ram's record of three victories in a single NexGen season — a feat Ram had achieved in 2010 — while also becoming the first player to win three consecutive events on the tour. His total season earnings of INR 10,04,393 secured him the 2026 DP World PGTI NexGen Order of Merit title and, critically, an exemption onto the DP World PGTI Main Tour for the 2027 season.

How the Final Round Unfolded

Playing in the shotgun format from the first hole, Chowrasia faced an early test — a double bogey on the par-3 sixth and a dropped shot on the par-5 ninth threatened to unravel his overnight lead. The Kolkata golfer steadied himself on the back nine, mixing two birdies with two bogeys to safely close out the title. It was a display of composure rather than brilliance, but composure was all that was needed. Notably, Chowrasia had set the course record of six-under 64 in Round Two, a mark later equalled by two other competitors.

Runners-Up and Leaderboard

Mukeem Ali of Mathura (67-68-73) and Kolkata's Souvik Nayak (69-69-70) finished joint second at two-under 208, four shots adrift of the champion. Local favourite Hemant Yadav (69-64-77), an employee of Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) who had matched the course record with a 64 in round two, slipped to a share of fourth at even-par 210 after a difficult closing 77. He was joined in fourth by Gurugram's Nikhil Sharma (68-74-68) and Delhi's Pawan Kumar (76-70-64), the latter producing one of the standout rounds of the day by matching the course record of six-under 64.

Chowrasia on His Journey Back from Injury

Speaking after the win, Chowrasia said, 'It feels great. Securing my card for next season on the main tour is a big achievement and gives me a lot of confidence going forward. Now the focus shifts to preparing myself to compete consistently at that level and becoming a stronger player.'

He also reflected on a difficult period on the sidelines: 'The injury period was difficult because all I wanted to do was play golf. Watching friends and fellow professionals compete while I was sidelined wasn't easy, but I always believed I would come back. To be standing here now after everything I've gone through makes it even more rewarding.'

Chowrasia, nephew of legendary Indian golfer SSP Chawrasia, thanked his uncle for support through the tough times and indicated he would eye the Asian Tour Qualifying School later in the year as his next major milestone.

What's Next for Chowrasia

With his Main Tour card secured for 2027, Chowrasia's immediate focus will be on bridging the gap between the NexGen and Main Tour levels. His consistent ball-striking and mental resilience over the past three weeks suggest he is well-placed to make that transition. The Asian Tour Qualifying School remains an additional target, one that could open doors to the continental circuit.
