New Delhi, Aug 16 (NationPress) The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have refuted the assertions made by renowned off-spin bowling all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin regarding the signing fee of South African batter Dewald Brevis as a substitute player for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The franchise stated that their actions were in strict adherence to IPL player regulations.
Ashwin claimed on his YouTube channel that Brevis was meant to be signed at the base price, yet received additional compensation to participate in IPL 2025.
However, CSK clarified on Saturday that Brevis' signing was executed in accordance with the IPL guidelines and that he was not compensated beyond the official amount detailed in the advisory dated April 18. Brevis joined CSK for INR 2.2 crore as a replacement for the injured fast-bowler Gurjapneet Singh.
“Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player for TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were fully compliant with IPL rules and regulations,” stated CSK.
“In April 2025, Dewald Brevis was signed for a league fee of INR 2.2 Cr as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh, who was selected at the IPL 2025 Player Auction held at Abadi AI Johar Arena, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the same amount,” CSK further explained in their statement.
Brevis went on to score 225 runs in six innings for CSK in IPL 2025, where the team ultimately finished in tenth place on the points table. “Dewald Brevis was signed in complete accordance with the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, particularly clause 6.6 under ‘Replacement Players’, which specifies: ‘A replacement Player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee not exceeding that which would have been payable to the injured/unavailable Player for the respective Season.’
“If a Replacement Player is acquired during a Season, the actual League Fee paid to him will be adjusted to account for the Franchisee’s matches that occurred before his registration and any other relevant deductions as per the Player Contract,” further elaborated CSK’s statement.
