New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) The Chennai Super Kings, who have claimed the IPL championship title five times, have acquired South African batsman Dewald Brevis as a substitute for the injured uncapped left-arm fast bowler Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the ongoing 2025 season.
Dewald Brevis has participated in 81 T20 matches, accumulating 1787 runs with a top score of 162. He made his T20I debut for South Africa in 2023 and has played two matches to date. Previously, he was with the Mumbai Indians (MI), where he appeared in 10 matches, and will now join CSK for INR 2.2 crore. This move is advantageous for CSK as they had an available overseas spot in their IPL 2025 roster.
Earlier, CSK had brought in Mumbai and India U19 batter Ayush Mhatre to fill in for injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was sidelined due to an elbow fracture. The addition of Brevis has ignited rumors of a mid-season entry for CSK in IPL 2025, especially after he shared a cryptic yellow image on his Instagram account on Friday afternoon.
The talented batsman, known as ‘Baby AB’ for his striking resemblance to the batting style of the legendary AB de Villiers, has made a significant impact in CPL, MLC, and SA20, where he finished as the sixth-highest run-scorer with 291 runs at a strike rate of 184.17, contributing to MI Cape Town’s first title.
Brevis first gained attention for being the leading run-scorer in the 2022 ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup held in the West Indies, where he scored 506 runs in six innings, including two centuries alongside a 96 against Ireland and a 97 against eventual runners-up England.
CSK, under the leadership of MS Dhoni for the remaining IPL 2025 matches, currently finds itself at the bottom of the points table with just two wins from seven games. Their next encounter will be against fellow five-time champions Mumbai Indians in a highly anticipated match at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday evening.
