Lucknow, March 6 (NationPress) As Delhi Capitals (DC) gear up for their upcoming clash against Gujarat Giants (GG) at Ekana Cricket Stadium on Friday, head coach Jonathan Batty remarked that even though the team has secured their place in the playoffs of the 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL), their work is far from complete.
During the concluding phase of the Bengaluru segment of the tournament, DC, currently leading the points table, achieved their playoff qualification for the third consecutive year, thanks to victories over last year's champions, Mumbai Indians, and the defending titleholders, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in successive days.
This match against GG marks their only appearance in Lucknow before shifting their focus to the playoff matches at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. “The competitive nature of this five-team tournament is truly remarkable as all teams are well-balanced,” Batty noted.
“Securing a playoff spot was our first milestone. However, the job isn't finished. We are concentrating on our upcoming game against Gujarat Giants on Friday night, which allows us to control our destiny,” Batty stated during a franchise announcement on Thursday.
Addressing the players' recovery after a series of matches in Bengaluru, Batty mentioned, “With our packed schedule during the Bengaluru phase, managing player workload is crucial to prevent injuries. We appreciate having a few days for rest and recovery to recharge, followed by intense training sessions leading up to our final group game on Friday night.”
Batty commended the young left-arm spinner N Sree Charani, who took two wickets in her debut WPL match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. “Our scouts highlighted her potential since last season. She has impressed us greatly during our pre-season camp in Pune, and it’s wonderful to witness her performance on debut. She always brings positivity,” he added.
GG, coming off a solid victory against UP Warriorz, currently sits in second place on the points table, making them a tough challenge for DC. “Gujarat Giants are exceptionally strong, with a formidable batting lineup, and containing their batters will be critical to our success in the game,” he concluded.
