New Delhi, March 19 (NationPress) The forthcoming English cricket season is confronted with an unexpected challenge: a shortage of Dukes balls, which threatens to hinder preparations for both domestic and international events. The delays in shipping through Gulf routes, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between the US and Israel against Iran, have significantly hampered the transport of cricket balls from South Asia to the UK, creating logistical difficulties for the organizers.

The English season is scheduled to commence on April 3, but officials have indicated that the stock of Dukes balls, essential for home Tests and the County Championship involving all 18 first-class counties, has already dwindled to approximately half of the normal supply. With the availability of balls limited, teams might have to ration their supplies at the season's start.

Dilip Jajodia, the proprietor of British Cricket Balls Ltd, the manufacturer of Dukes balls, pointed out the repercussions of the Gulf conflict on freight and logistics.

“We’re currently facing a significant crisis due to this ongoing Gulf War issue. We must ration clubs by providing them with only 50% of their balls initially and then manage the situation from there. The factories in the subcontinent are ready to dispatch, but the airlines are unable to transport the freight due to a backlog,” he told the Daily Mail.

Jajodia further elaborated that the conflict has led to a steep rise in transportation costs, with safety concerns and disrupted flight paths over the Middle East driving up freight charges.

“The rates have escalated dramatically. A box of 120 cricket balls, which would typically be charged by airlines at around $5 per kilo, has surged to $15 per kilo. Most shipments traverse the Middle East, but with rockets flying around, we face a substantial challenge,” he added.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Jajodia injected some humor, stating, “If I had foreseen this, I would have spoken to Donald Trump. Please don’t initiate any attacks before the cricket season kicks off!”

An official from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) acknowledged that this supply disruption has served as a wake-up call for the domestic industry.

The creation of Dukes balls is a meticulous, multi-step process rather than a straightforward factory task. The leather originates from British cowhide, which is tanned and treated in Chesterfield before being sent to South Asia, where skilled craftsmen hand-stitch each ball with precision. Once completed, the balls are shipped back to the UK for final preparation and distribution prior to the professional season.

As the first matches approach in just weeks, English cricket authorities must adeptly manage these supply challenges to guarantee a seamless season.
