From Watching HIL Matches to Playing in Them: Amir Ali's Inspiring Journey

New Delhi, Dec 6 (NationPress) Amir Ali, the 20-year-old captain of the Indian junior men’s hockey team, is poised to leave his mark in the forthcoming Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25. Acquired by Team Gonasika for Rs 34 lakh during the auction, Amir’s journey from humble origins to becoming a key player in Indian hockey is nothing less than inspirational.
Born and raised in Lucknow, Amir is the son of a bike mechanic. He juggled assisting his father after school while also chasing his passion for hockey, participating in coaching sessions alongside his work commitments. His transition from part-time mechanic to leading the Indian junior team in significant international competitions underscores the determination and hard work that characterize his career.
Reflecting on the driving forces behind his decision to pursue hockey, Amir shared, "In my teenage years, I felt ashamed of my father’s profession as a bike mechanic because I wasn’t mature enough to see that no job is minor. However, our family’s challenges motivated me to chase my dreams in hockey. I aimed to transform our financial situation and bring pride to my family and country. That aspiration fueled my ambition to succeed as a hockey player."
"Now, everything I earn from hockey goes to my father because I want to alleviate any hardships he faces. My aim is to support him in every possible way, and knowing that it brings him happiness is what fulfills me," he added.
Amir, a defender, notably led the Indian team to victory in the Junior Asia Cup and is now eager to participate in the upcoming HIL, aiming to maintain his winning streak.
"Winning the Junior Asia Cup significantly boosted my confidence, and I feel ready to carry this momentum into the league. The experience of senior players in the HIL will be invaluable, and I’m excited to learn and perform alongside them,” he expressed.
Interestingly, Amir’s ties to the Hockey India League trace back to his childhood. He reminisced about walking 10 kilometers just to witness his idol, Manpreet Singh, compete in a HIL match in Lucknow. Now, the circle has come back around for Amir, as he has not only secured his spot in the prestigious league but will also share the field with his idol, Manpreet Singh, in Team Gonasika.
"It’s surreal to think that I once went to watch HIL matches, and now I’ll be playing in them. It’s a profoundly special feeling. My parents are immensely proud, which brings me great joy,” he noted. "I am thrilled to play alongside my idol Manpreet Singh and eager to learn from him, aiming to give my best under his guidance," he added.
The young defender is resolute in his objectives for the upcoming season. "I want to give my all and ensure that Team Gonasika excels. I’ve been given a great responsibility, and I’m determined to repay that trust by contributing to the team's success. My goal for this season is to lift the HIL trophy with my team," expressed Amir, who also views this as a stepping stone towards a future in India’s senior national team.
Amir’s journey from grassroots hockey to the national level serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes. His advice for young players emphasizes hard work, discipline, and respect for their coaches. "Always respect your coach, maintain discipline, and work diligently. If you are honest with your efforts, you will achieve your goals," he advised.
