Gautam Gambhir Prays at Gurudwara After India's Historic T20 World Cup Win
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 12 (NationPress) India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir visited Gurudwara Shri Rakab Ganj Sahib on Thursday to offer his prayers in gratitude following India's victorious run in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
India clinched the championship with a decisive 96-run victory over New Zealand in the final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. This win established India as the first nation to secure three T20 World Cup titles and the first to defend the trophy on home turf.
The former Indian opener was observed in quiet reflection at the gurudwara in the capital, continuing his tradition of spiritual visits during and post-tournament.
Immediately following the triumph, as celebrations erupted nationwide, team captain Suryakumar Yadav, coach Gambhir, and ICC chairman Jay Shah visited the Hanuman Temple in Ahmedabad, where they offered prayers while proudly holding the trophy.
In the lead-up to the tournament, Gambhir also visited various temples, including the Kamakhya Temple prior to the third T20I of the five-match series against New Zealand in January. After the third match, he, along with teammates, went to the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Temple before the fourth T20I.
Having been a pivotal member of India's 2007 ICC T20 World Cup-winning squad, Gambhir achieved another significant milestone by securing the title both as a player and as a coach.
With this latest victory, he joined the ranks of elite coaches like Rahul Dravid and Lalchand Rajput, who have led India to T20 World Cup success.
After lifting the trophy, Gambhir expressed the team's desire to establish its own legacy through fearless cricket and consistent performances that outshine competitors.
“I don’t believe in inheriting anything. I believe in creating something, and hopefully, we’ve created something that all of you can be proud of — the kind of cricket we’ve played. It’s not just about inheriting a team; it’s about crafting something unique,” Gambhir stated at the post-match press conference.
“That has always been my goal as a coach — to see if we could play an entirely different style of cricket where people can say that this is a team that has consistently outscored and outbowled the opposition,” he added.
