Dubai, Sep 20 (NationPress) India’s cricketing icon Sunil Gavaskar has commended T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav for his strategic choices during the recent Asia Cup 2025 match against Oman. Suryakumar guided India to their third straight victory in the tournament, enabling the Men in Blue to advance to the Super Fours stage without any defeats.
In the final group match against Oman on Friday, Suryakumar made the unconventional choice not to bat when India opted to bat first, allowing all 10 other players in the playing XI to showcase their batting skills, while the skipper took the 11th spot.
This decision faced criticism from various analysts, yet Gavaskar viewed it as a wise move. Discussing it on Sony Sports Network, the former Indian captain remarked:
“Had he batted for even a single over, he could have scored a few boundaries, which would have been beneficial. However, considering his performance against Pakistan, he might not require batting practice. He could have believed that Kuldeep Yadav’s batting skills could be crucial if India encountered early wickets in a future match. Perhaps that’s why he opted for Kuldeep to bat.”
Labeling the 35-year-old Mumbai cricketer as an ‘inventive strategist,’ Gavaskar continued: “He is indeed an unorthodox thinker. We observed in Sri Lanka when he bowled himself and also handed the ball to Rinku Singh. He transformed a game that seemed lost into a victory for India. He is an innovative strategist; perhaps that's the reason he chose not to bat and sent in Kuldeep and Arshdeep Singh instead.”
It’s worth noting that India triumphed over Oman by 21 runs, marking their third consecutive win.
The group stage of the Asia Cup wrapped up with India’s match against Oman on Friday, leading to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan progressing to the Super Fours.
In the second stage, six matches will unfold, with each team facing the others once. The top two teams in the points table will advance to the final match.
India will kick off their Super Fours journey against arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday, September 21, followed by clashes against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on September 24 and 26, respectively.
