Gonzalo Peillat: HIL's Potential to Inspire Global Investment in Hockey

New Delhi, Dec 2 (NationPress) Germany’s esteemed defender and drag-flicker Gonzalo Peillat is all set to make a remarkable comeback to the Hockey India League (HIL), where he will represent Hyderabad Toofans in the 2024-25 season. The much-anticipated revival of the league, after a seven-year break, promises to inject fresh energy into the international hockey arena, and Peillat is eager to be involved again.

Having participated in earlier HIL seasons, Peillat fondly reminisces about his experiences in India and the memorable moments that forged his bond with the nation and its fans. "What excites me the most about returning to the Hockey India League is the chance to share the field with so many skilled international players from various nations. It’s a unique opportunity to learn from each other, both on and off the field,” Peillat expressed.

"Moreover, hockey is one of the leading sports in India, and the enthusiasm of the fans—whether they’re cheering in crowded stadiums or from home on TV—creates an electrifying atmosphere. As a player, being part of such a vibrant environment is incredibly thrilling," he added.

The Argentine-born athlete, who currently represents Germany, is confident that the revival of HIL will once again elevate the sport's status. "The impact is going to be substantial. The league had already made a significant impression on the hockey world previously, and now, with its return, it will attract even more interest. Everyone will be watching intently, and it’s exciting to consider the potential influence it can have on promoting hockey globally," said Peillat, who was the most expensive international player at Rs 68 lakh during the HIL 2024-25 auction.

Peillat’s return also brings back cherished memories of his previous experiences in India. One of his fondest recollections is his debut in the HIL with the Kalinga Lancers, where he trained alongside young Indian players who have since become key members of the national team.

"I remember my first year with the Kalinga Lancers, where we had numerous talented young players. Now, many of them are part of India’s national team. It’s gratifying to witness how much they’ve evolved over the years since we played together. Being exposed to international players at an early stage provides young athletes with the opportunity to observe how professionals train, think, and conduct themselves. It accelerates their adaptation to the international level and prepares them for the rigors of top-tier hockey," he stated.

Peillat also highlighted the substantial financial opportunities that international leagues like the HIL present. This is especially significant for him as he has recently embraced fatherhood. "The earnings will primarily support my family. I recently became a father two months ago, so a considerable portion will go towards my family’s needs and saving for the future. Honestly, I’m quite pleased with what I received in the auction because it makes the decision to be away from my family for eight weeks—particularly during Christmas with a 3-month-old baby—a bit easier to rationalize," he shared.

Besides its impact on players, Peillat believes that the HIL can play a pivotal role in enhancing the global appeal of hockey, particularly women’s hockey. “The Hockey India League can showcase the excitement and competitiveness of hockey on a worldwide platform, inspiring more countries to invest in the sport. For women’s hockey specifically, if the league highlights female players and shares their stories and achievements, it could significantly boost awareness and popularity. Providing equal opportunities and visibility for women’s hockey is essential for its growth, and leagues like the HIL can contribute significantly to that,” he added.

Outside the realm of hockey, Peillat is engaged in various ventures, including his role at Mannheimer Hockey Club in Germany, where he oversees the club’s sponsorship activities. “I’m accountable for negotiating favorable deals with existing sponsors and striving to attract new ones each year. The objective is to secure increased support not only for the elite men’s and women’s teams but also for the youth teams,” he explained.
