IPL 2026: GT's fast bowling unit leads with 72 wickets, Prasidh credits clarity
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gujarat Titans fast bowler Prasidh Krishna has attributed his side's dominant fast bowling campaign in IPL 2026 to a combination of collective clarity and sustained hard work, saying the unit's success is no coincidence. Speaking ahead of GT's clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Saturday, Prasidh said the group's long familiarity with each other's game has been a decisive edge.
The Numbers Behind the Dominance
GT's fast bowling unit has taken 72 wickets in IPL 2026 — 15 more than the next best, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have 57 each. Their economy rate of 8.9 is the best in the league. They are also the only side this season to have five bowlers cross the ten-wicket mark: Kagiso Rabada (21), Rashid Khan (16), Prasidh Krishna (14), Mohammed Siraj (13), and Jason Holder (13).
'It's been great. We have known each other for quite some time now. It just gets easier when somebody is doing really well, somebody is very clear. I think it's an accumulation of having a lot of clarity, having worked hard together a lot and it's just showing on the ground today,' Prasidh said.
Powerplay Stranglehold
The engine of GT's bowling attack has been particularly lethal in the powerplay. Siraj and Rabada have each bowled three overs in five consecutive matches, and between them have bowled through an entire powerplay seven times in a single IPL season. The impact is reflected in the data: GT have taken the most powerplay wickets in IPL 2026 — 25 — and hold the best powerplay economy rate of 8.6. Crucially, when they take three or more wickets in the powerplay, they have won five out of six matches.
Prasidh, who claimed the Purple Cap last season with 25 wickets, acknowledged how early breakthroughs ease the burden on the bowlers who follow. 'It definitely eases out when you know you have such bowlers that can create so much damage in the powerplay. You come in with a scoreboard reading two, three and four wickets and that definitely helps,' he said.
Holder's Standout Contribution
Jason Holder has been a notable addition to the unit, taking 13 wickets in just six innings at an economy rate of 6.4 and a strike rate of 10.3. His last three innings have yielded 10 wickets at 5.3 runs per over. Prasidh described Holder as a calming, clarifying presence. 'He is very, very enjoyable I would say and also comes in with a lot of cricket under him. He has got a great brain... he comes in with a lot of clarity. He is a leader as well, has led teams before and walked around it,' Prasidh said.
Nehra's Role and Team Unity
In GT's eight wins this season, the Player of the Match award has gone to a bowler or bowling all-rounder seven times — Prasidh (once), Holder (twice), Rashid Khan (twice), and Rabada (twice). GT also holds the best overall bowling economy in IPL 2026 at 9.
Prasidh credited head coach Ashish Nehra as the architect of the unit's cohesion. 'The chatter is always on and I think with Ashish Nehra around, you are always learning. When you sit down for a chai with him, when you are on the bus, or when you are on the ground having his favourite coconut water, there is chatter all the time,' he said. He added that Nehra's constant engagement — and the weight behind every word he shares — has been invaluable for his own development as a bowler.
On GT's three-game winning streak at their home ground, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad — where they recently bowled out Sunrisers Hyderabad for just 86 in 14.5 overs — Prasidh was clear that conditions are secondary to the team's belief in each other. 'The domination is down to the team itself. It's not the conditions,' he said.
Playoffs in Sight
GT currently occupy second place with 16 points, putting their playoff qualification in a strong position. Prasidh remained measured but optimistic. 'It's still in the reckoning. It's just a result of all the process and the hard work that the teams put in,' he said. He also addressed the challenge of bowling to fearless young batters like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Priyansh Arya, saying age is irrelevant in T20 cricket. 'The challenge is real. I think the age doesn't really mean anything for a cricketer. It's just about what impact he or she can create,' he said. With the Eden Gardens fixture on the horizon, GT's bowling machine shows no signs of slowing down.
