New Delhi, July 29 (NationPress) Lewis Hamilton has expressed his unwavering support for Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, asserting that the 18-year-old is performing remarkably despite the escalating criticism regarding his recent Formula 1 outings.
“I can’t fathom what it’s like at 18, or even try to envision the pressure he’s under at such a young age,” Hamilton remarked during an interview with Sky Sports.
“I believe he’s doing an incredible job, being thrust into such a challenging situation at just 18. He hadn’t even obtained his driving license when he embarked on his racing career, so the weight on his shoulders is immense, and he’s managing it well.”
Antonelli, who took over from the seven-time World Champion at Mercedes this season, kicked off his F1 journey with a series of commendable results, including five points finishes in the initial six races and a podium finish in Canada. However, he has since experienced a downturn in performance.
The Italian collided with Max Verstappen in Austria, failed to score at Silverstone, and had a disappointing outing in Belgium—where he didn’t make it past SQ1 and Q1, finishing outside the points. He appeared visibly upset during the post-race interviews.
This pressure is not entirely unfamiliar. Antonelli faced challenges in 2024, crashing during his practice debut at Monza amid significant expectations. He later confessed to feeling mentally and physically drained leading up to his home race at Imola this year, overwhelmed by the pressures of racing in his home country.
Nonetheless, Hamilton believes Antonelli is managing the pressure as well as anyone could at such a tender age.
“He’s surrounded by a fantastic team. He just needs to take it all in stride, which I think he is doing,” Hamilton added.
“And as I mentioned, he has Bono [Pete Bonnington, Hamilton’s former engineer] by his side, so he couldn’t ask for a better support system.”
