Southampton, March 28 (NationPress) Hampshire have officially acquired Dewald Brevis, the South African batter, for their T20 Blast season, with the possibility of participating in the County Championship.
The 21-year-old gained recognition during the 2022 ICC Men’s U19 World Cup, where he amassed an impressive 506 runs, featuring two centuries and three fifties across just six innings.
Following that, he has played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, MI New York in the MLC, and MI Cape Town in the SA20, in addition to stints with the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League, and Morrisville Samp Army and New York Strikers in the Abu Dhabi T10.
Brevis will team up with compatriot Lhuan-dre Pretorius for the Hawks this season, as the 2022 champions aim for a spot back at Finals Day.
"I’m really looking forward to joining Hampshire Hawks for the Vitality Blast this summer. The team has a rich history in this competition, and I’m eager to contribute," Brevis stated.
"Having Lhuan-dre with us is fantastic, and we hope to entertain the crowd at Utilita Bowl while striving for Finals Day and the trophy. I’m also excited about playing in the County Championship; the team was so close last year, and I aim to help the club contend for the title in 2025," he added.
In his brief career so far, Brevis has accumulated 1,787 runs in 81 T20 matches, averaging 26.27 with a strike rate of 144.93.
He boasts one century – a remarkable 162 off 57 balls in the CSA T20 Challenge in October 2022 – along with seven fifties.
This season in the SA20, Brevis scored 291 runs, ranking second for MI Cape Town and sixth overall, with a strike rate of 184.
Moreover, he has surpassed 1000 runs in 17 First-Class matches, including three centuries and five half-centuries.
"Dewald is a remarkable young talent who will significantly enhance our batting order this summer. He arrives in great form, and with Lhuan-dre Pretorius, we’ll have two young players eager to make a significant impact," commented Giles White, Hampshire’s Director of Cricket.
