Hobart, Feb 25 (NationPress) In a thrilling conclusion to their Hobart leg of the FIH Men’s Pro League 2025-26, India clinched a 3-1 victory over Australia in a penalty shootout after a nail-biting 1-1 draw in regulation time, securing a valuable bonus point. The scoreboard was opened by Shilanand Lakra in the 51st minute, while Australia's Captain Jeremy Hayward had scored earlier at the 49th minute. During the shootout, Lakra, Maninder Singh, and Vishnukant Singh all successfully converted their chances, aided by the impressive performance of India's young goalkeeper Mohith Honnenahalli Shashikumar, who made critical saves.

The match commenced with both teams engaged in a tightly contested first quarter. While Australia dominated possession, India showcased their resilience through robust defense and effective counterattacks. Mohith Honnenahalli Shashikumar made pivotal saves early on, keeping India in contention. India's first penalty corner came in the 11th minute; however, Amandeep Lakra's dragflick was thwarted by the Australian defense. Shortly after, a promising opportunity arose but Abhishek's attempt just missed the target.

Throughout the second quarter, the teams remained evenly matched. In the 16th minute, Abhishek skillfully maneuvered inside the circle to pass to Manmeet Singh, whose shot was denied by the Australian goalie. Later, in the 25th minute, Australia received a penalty corner, but Suraj Karkera made a remarkable save to prevent them from scoring.

India earned their second penalty corner in the 38th minute, but Araijeet Singh Hundal's shot was easily stopped. Moments later, the young forward missed a deflected shot by mere inches. Australia threatened with consecutive penalty corners in the 42nd and 45th minutes, with Joel Rintala's drag flick striking the post, but Mohith managed to clear the danger.

In the final quarter, the scoring commenced with Australia taking the lead through a penalty corner converted by Jeremy Hayward at the 49-minute mark. India responded swiftly, equalizing just two minutes later. Hardik Singh initiated the play with a sharp pass to Abhishek, who found Poovanna Chandura Boby, setting up Shilanand Lakra perfectly to score in the 51st minute.

With the match tied, India pressed forward aggressively, creating multiple penalty corners and opportunities in the closing minutes. Yet, neither side could find the net, leading to the shootout.

Ultimately, India triumphed against Australia 3-1 in the shootout, with successful conversions from Lakra, Singh, and Singh, complemented by three crucial saves from Mohith Honnenahalli Shashikumar, securing the bonus point for India.
