Are India Women Ready for the Aus Series? S&C Coach Nicholas Lee Shares Insights
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 11 (NationPress) Harmanpreet Kaur-led Team India has officially commenced their training for the forthcoming multi-format series against Australia. Nicholas Lee, the newly appointed strength and conditioning coach, is thrilled about collaborating with the world champions and putting their skills to the test against one of the premier teams in women’s cricket.
The Women in Blue touched down in Australia earlier this week to kick off the multi-format series, which is set to begin on February 15 and comprises three T20 Internationals, three One-Day Internationals, and a single Test match.
Lee, who is taking on his first assignment with the team during this tour, shared his eagerness to both contribute to and learn from the players. "This is my first experience working with a world champion team. I am genuinely excited about what I can absorb from these incredible athletes, as well as how I can assist them in their journey. I am eagerly anticipating the upcoming years," Lee stated in a video released by BCCI Women on X.
He also mentioned his initial perceptions of the squad, noting the vibrant energy within the team. "Though I haven't spent a lot of time with them yet, it's clear that Rodrigues brings a lot of energy. She appears to be very lively and enthusiastic. I'm fortunate to have worked with great players in the past," he commented.
Lee stressed the significance of managing both workload and recovery, especially following the long flight from India to Australia. The team has initially focused on lighter gym sessions and recovery measures to combat jet lag before progressing to high-intensity training as they prepare for the demanding series.
“The time difference from India to Australia is considerable. It takes a few days for the body to adapt, and proper sleep is crucial. Therefore, during the initial days here, we’ve taken a more relaxed approach with recovery sessions and light workouts, gradually ramping up to high-intensity training.
“Playing cricket means competing against the best teams globally. Australia has consistently been among the top teams in women’s cricket for many years. Thus, they are the opponents you want to challenge yourself against. Having the chance to visit Australia, where I’ve previously worked in men’s cricket, and now witnessing the Australian women face the Indian women is truly exciting,” he added.
Given Australia's dominance in women’s cricket in recent years, this upcoming series poses a significant challenge for India. Under Harmanpreet Kaur’s guidance and with an enhanced focus on fitness and conditioning, the team is determined to deliver robust performances across all formats during what promises to be a closely scrutinized tour.
