Former South Africa all-rounder Justin Kemp has been appointed as Cricket Namibia's new Director of Cricket, the board confirmed on Wednesday, 10 June. The appointment places Kemp at the helm of the country's entire cricket operations, from grassroots development to international performance.

Kemp's Playing and Coaching Background

Kemp represented South Africa in 4 Tests, 85 ODIs, and 8 T20Is between 2001 and 2007 as a right-arm medium-pace bowling all-rounder. He also featured for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during their title-winning Indian Premier League (IPL) 2010 campaign, giving him firsthand experience of elite franchise cricket.

On the coaching front, Kemp served as assistant coach at Western Province within South Africa's domestic structure in 2024, before transitioning to a similar role with Cricket Namibia the following year. His franchise coaching exposure spans the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) with Chattogram Royals and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with Rawalpindi.

Scope of the New Role

According to a Cricket Namibia statement, Kemp will oversee 'the strategic direction of cricket operations across Cricket Namibia, including the national teams, high-performance programmes, talent identification structures, coach development pathways and the continued growth of the game throughout the country.'

Notably, Kemp was part of Namibia's coaching staff during the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup held across India and Sri Lanka, meaning he already has direct knowledge of the programme he is now tasked with leading.

Cricket Namibia's Strategic Vision

Cricket Namibia said the appointment 'aligns with its vision of becoming a globally competitive cricket nation,' adding that Kemp's blend of international playing experience and exposure to leading high-performance and franchise environments would 'strengthen its cricketing systems and create sustainable pathways from grassroots participation to international success.'

The board further noted that the move 'represents another important step in ensuring that Namibian cricket remains competitive on the global stage while developing the next generation of players.'

Namibia has steadily raised its profile in Associate cricket, qualifying for successive T20 World Cups. A Director of Cricket with Kemp's multi-format playing record and multi-league coaching résumé signals an intent to professionalise the administrative backbone that underpins on-field performance. Whether the expanded high-performance and talent identification structures can translate into consistent results at ICC events will be the measure of this appointment's success.
