'Character Matters Even in Defeat,' Says Karthik After RCB's Loss to RR
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, April 11 (NationPress) Dinesh Karthik, the head coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), praised his team's resilience and competitive spirit following a six-wicket defeat to Rajasthan Royals (RR) during their third encounter of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at Barsapara Stadium on Friday.
“Understanding that the IPL is a long journey is vital; you won’t win every match. However, if the team consistently demonstrates character and determination, that’s what truly matters,” Karthik stated in a video shared by RCB on X.
Evaluating the playing conditions, Karthik acknowledged that the pitch posed challenges for batting, despite RCB's aggressive start.
“Initially, I sensed that the pitch was not conducive for batting. We began with Salty playing aggressively, and while we built momentum, the pitch wasn't really supporting our play. For instance, Dave's dismissal illustrated that the pitch was tricky. Given the obstacles we faced, reaching the score we did was commendable,” he remarked.
Karthik highlighted the exceptional performance of captain Rajat Patidar, who scored 63 runs, aiding the team in recovering from an early loss to achieve a significant total of 201 runs in 20 overs.
“Rajat Patidar's performance was remarkable. It was wonderful to see his shot-making ability and his awareness of the game's situation. His commitment to stay until nearly the end reflects his character. The entire group feels proud of how he handled that challenging moment,” he commented.
He also commended Venkatesh Iyer, who took advantage of an unexpected opportunity to score 29 runs off just 15 balls.
“Venkatesh Iyer wasn’t originally slated to play, but he was informed at the last moment that he might need to bat, given our situation. For him to seize that opportunity and make a significant impact is fantastic. It’s promising, and I believe he’ll have a bright season whenever he gets a chance,” Karthik noted.
Regarding the bowling aspect, Karthik felt that securing an early wicket set the tone for RCB. “We took an early wicket of Jaiswal, which was crucial for our morale, and it came from a player we believe will significantly influence the powerplay,” he added.
Nonetheless, he acknowledged the match-changing performances from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Dhruv Jurel, who guided the team to chase down the target in just 18 overs.
“As is often the case in IPL, one extraordinary innings can change everything. They played beautifully, and even though almost 100 runs were scored in the initial six overs, we managed to keep the match competitive. This reflects the character of our team,” he said.
Despite the loss, Karthik maintained a positive outlook on the team's approach for future matches.
“While the outcome wasn't in our favor, we put forth our best effort and did everything we could to create an exciting match. I hope you all enjoyed watching us play,” he concluded.
RCB is set to face the five-time champions Mumbai Indians at the iconic Wankhede Stadium this Sunday.
