Sebastian Korda Triumphs at Delray Beach Open for Third ATP Title
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Florida, Feb 23 (NationPress) Sebastian Korda has secured his third ATP Tour victory, demonstrating a poised performance against fellow American Tommy Paul, winning the final of the Delray Beach Open with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Having narrowly missed out as the runner-up in the same tournament in 2021, Korda has come back to claim the trophy this time, joining the ranks of the ninth American man to win at this prestigious Florida event. This triumph elevates the 25-year-old to No. 40 in the ATP Live Rankings.
“(It means) so much. I've faced various challenges over the past months and years, and after losing several finals, to achieve victory here in Delray—where I first reached an ATP final—is truly a full-circle moment. I’m just thrilled,” Korda expressed.
Amid gusty winds, Korda exhibited assertive baseline play, managing rallies with precise and confident shot-making. He claimed the first set with a crucial break at 5-4 and excelled behind his first serve, winning 83% of those points, as reported by ATP.
The second set unfolded with late tension. While serving for the championship, Korda found himself down 0/40 but remained resilient, saving four break points before clinching the win after an hour and 22 minutes of play.
“It was challenging. Both of us were struggling due to the wind. I aimed to keep the ball in play. Growing up in Florida, I’m somewhat accustomed to the wind, but this was definitely extreme,” Korda remarked.
Korda's journey to the title was far from easy. He eliminated three of the top five seeds in the tournament, including second seed Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals and third seed Flavio Cobolli in the semi-finals.
This championship match was the second all-American final of the season, following the earlier clash in Dallas. With this victory, Korda improves his ATP Head2Head record against Paul to 5-2. The two had not faced each other in almost 20 months, since their meeting at the Queen's Club Championships in 2024.
For Paul, aged 28, this defeat marked a missed opportunity for his fifth career ATP Tour title. Korda's success signifies a substantial milestone in his comeback. Last season, he was unable to compete from Roland Garros through Winston-Salem due to a stress fracture in his right shin, which required a protective boot and crutches for recovery. Now back in form, Korda’s win in Delray Beach indicates a promising return to competitive tennis and possibly the start of another ascent in his career.
