Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) The captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Rishabh Pant, along with the franchise's principal owner and chairman, Sanjiv Goenka, and several squad members, participated in a prayer ceremony at the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya in anticipation of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The 19th edition of this prestigious tournament is scheduled to commence on March 28.
The franchise shared a photo from their visit to the sacred site on X, stating, "Dr. Sanjiv Goenka visits Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya with captain Rishabh Pant and squad members to seek blessings."
Since their inception, LSG has had a mix of successes and challenges. Under KL Rahul's leadership, they made it to the IPL 2022 playoffs but were knocked out in the eliminator. In IPL 2023, LSG reached the second round but faced elimination once more in the Eliminator, with Krunal Pandya taking charge during the latter half of that season.
In IPL 2024, the team did not progress past the league stage, leading to the management releasing Rahul before the IPL 2025 mega-auction. The Lucknow-based franchise made a historic bid of Rs 27 crore for Rishabh Pant, making him the priciest player in league history, and subsequently named him captain.
Under Pant’s captaincy, LSG had a disappointing IPL season, securing only six wins in 14 matches. Their performance faltered in the latter stages, suffering four consecutive losses which adversely affected their standing. They concluded the season with a defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Pant faced struggles with the bat, amassing 269 runs across 13 innings, including one century and one half-century.
As they gear up for IPL 2026, Lucknow is determined to reach their first final. They will kick off their season against the Delhi Capitals on April 1, followed by a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 5. According to the initial schedule released by the BCCI, their next two matches are against the Kolkata Knight Riders on April 9 and the Gujarat Titans on April 12.
