New Delhi, April 20 (NationPress) Mark Boucher, the previous head coach of the Mumbai Indians, asserts that the swift departures of Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran provided the perfect opportunity for Aiden Markram to display his skills by taking calculated risks, culminating in an impressive 66 off 45 balls during the team’s narrow two-run victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR).
"From a mental perspective, he (Markram) entered the IPL without the highest contract. When you're playing alongside Marsh and Pooran, you might assume he would take a backseat in this scenario.
“I believe when Marsh departed for personal matters, Markram began to stand out, adopting the role of 'I'm the senior player here' in this situation. With Marsh and Pooran dismissed early in this match, it seemed to bring out the best in him as well," Boucher remarked on ESPNCricinfo.
Despite a slow commencement to IPL 2025 after being acquired by LSG for Rs 2 crore, Markram has achieved scores of 53, 47, 58, and 66 in four of his last five matches while serving as the designated opener alongside Marsh. "Aiden is a natural leader, and he is captaining South Africa for these reasons as well."
"When such an opportunity arises, he takes it upon himself, saying, 'I am the one they trust to bat throughout the innings, and if there’s a risk to take, a smart one at that, I'm the one who will have to do it.' This situation almost compels him, which often brings out the best in players, particularly Markram," Boucher added.
Markram made his T20I debut for South Africa as an opener in 2019, transitioning to number three or four in 2021. Boucher believes this adjustment has enhanced Markram's game, making him a more complete player in this format.
"Moving a batter who was predominantly an opener to the No. 4 position (for South Africa) was beneficial because he was young enough to adapt and skilled enough to do so. He learned how to tackle spin in the middle phases and acquired various shots—reverse laps and others—necessary for his growth as a player."
"Now, at the peak of his career, he has returned to opening. He possesses a solid technique, is also a Test player, and has the aggression needed upfront. If the game progresses into the middle overs, he has the capability for that as well. Thus, he has evolved into a more versatile player," he concluded.
