How Can Indian Football Improve its Coaching System?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 16 (NationPress) Lothar Matthaus, the legendary German footballer and FIFA World Cup champion, emphasized the crucial need for enhancing coaching standards in India's youth football system during his recent trip to the city. He noted that the future of football in India largely depends on the quality of coaching at the grassroots level.
Matthaus highlighted the recent successes of smaller nations, referencing Cape Verde’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He remarked, “Look at Cape Verde; with a population of just 500,000, they managed to qualify for the World Cup. This raises a question about the abundance of talent in India. It’s vital for the federation, government, football clubs, and academies to collaborate effectively and find skilled coaches.”
Drawing a parallel between education and sports, he stated, “Just like in schools, good teachers lead to successful students. Similarly, having competent coaches in youth football will produce exceptional players, ultimately resulting in better outcomes for Indian football.”
Matthaus was in Kolkata to serve as the chief guest at the final of the inaugural Kolkata Police Women’s Friendship Cup Football Tournament, held at the Body Guard Lines.
During his media interactions, Matthaus also addressed the longstanding debate of Diego Maradona versus Lionel Messi. He confessed that such comparisons are challenging. “It’s a tough question to answer. The game has evolved significantly over the past 35 years, making it nearly impossible to compare players from different eras,” he mentioned.
Having faced Maradona but never competing against Messi due to age differences, Matthaus expressed admiration for the icons shaping modern football. “I feel fortunate to have played against icons like Maradona and to have witnessed players like Messi and Ronaldo. They inspire today’s youth far more than I ever could,” he remarked.
When pressed to choose between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Matthaus leaned towards Messi. “For me, Messi represents a more technical style of play, while Ronaldo is known for his power. Both are exceptional, but my preference is for the technical side of football,” he concluded.
