Mumbai, Oct 9 (NationPress) The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) declared on Thursday that elections for the office bearers, members of the Apex Council, and the T20 Mumbai League Governing Council will take place on November 12.
The Apex Council has reappointed J. S. Saharia, the former Chief Secretary and former State Election Commissioner of Maharashtra, as the Electoral Officer for the elections for the second consecutive year.
"Originally, the elections were set for October 23, but due to the festive season, it was determined that November 12 would be more suitable to avoid disrupting anyone's celebrations," stated an MCA official to IANS.
In July of the previous year, the association appointed the current secretary Ajinkya Naik as president, making him the youngest person to ever hold the position, succeeding the late Amol Kale, who passed away unexpectedly in June 2024 in New York.
Naik, elected at the age of 37, triumphed over Vice-President Sanjay Naik, who was supported by Mumbai BJP chief and BCCI Treasurer Ashish Shelar, winning by a margin of 107 votes in the election held on Tuesday. Naik secured 221 votes while Sanjay garnered 114, highlighting a largely one-sided contest.
During the Apex Council meeting on Wednesday, the MCA decided to erect a life-sized statue of former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
Notably, Vengsarkar has served as the vice-president of the association and received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the MCA earlier this year in March.
The MCA also resolved to establish academies throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to provide top-notch training and infrastructure for promising young players.
Recently, the association unveiled a statue of Sunil Gavaskar within the Wankhede premises, which already features a statue of the legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Additionally, the association inaugurated the Sharad Pawar Museum at the Wankhede Stadium as a tribute to Mumbai's unparalleled contribution to Indian and global cricket in August of this year.
