BCCI to Conduct Special General Meeting on January 12 to Elect New Secretary and Treasurer: Reports

New Delhi, Dec 21 (NationPress) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a Special General Meeting (SGM) at its Mumbai headquarters at 12 noon on January 12, 2025, for the purpose of electing a new Secretary and Treasurer.
According to sources who spoke to IANS, the notice for these elections was dispatched to state associations on Saturday afternoon by Devajit Saikia, acting in his capacity as the BCCI Joint Secretary. Notably, Saikia is currently fulfilling the role of acting Secretary, a position assigned to him after BCCI President Roger Binny exercised special powers as outlined in the constitution.
Article 7.2 (d) of the BCCI constitution states, "The President shall, in the event of a vacancy, or indisposition of an office-bearer, delegate the functions to another Office-Bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up, or the indisposition ceases."
The need for these elections arose following the resignation of Jay Shah from the Secretary position to assume the role of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) earlier this month. Subsequently, Ashish Shelar, the Treasurer, also stepped down from his position in the BCCI after being appointed as a cabinet minister in the Maharashtra state government.
The BCCI constitution prohibits ministers from holding office in the cricket board, necessitating Shelar's resignation from the Treasurer position. Furthermore, the constitution mandates that any vacancy in the Apex Council must be filled through elections "at a Special General Body Meeting of the BCCI convened by the secretary for that purpose within 45 days."
At this time, there has been no clear indication of who might fill the roles vacated by Shah and Shelar. However, the issuance of the election notice provides sufficient time for deliberation to determine the most suitable candidates for these two vacant positions within the BCCI.
