Candidates for BCCI Secretary and Treasurer Elections to be Revealed on January 7

New Delhi, Dec 21 (NationPress) A.K. Joti, the Electoral Officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has confirmed that the final list of candidates for the secretary and treasurer roles during the by-election will be disclosed on January 7 at 5 pm. The nomination phase for candidates is scheduled for January 3 and 4.

Previously, IANS reported that in a communication sent to state associations on Saturday afternoon, joint secretary Devajit Saikia mentioned that the SGM will convene at 12 noon on January 12 at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai to elect a new secretary and treasurer.

Notably, Saikia is currently serving as the acting secretary, following a decision made by BCCI president Roger Binny to exercise special powers as per the constitution. Article 7.2 (d) of the BCCI constitution states, "The President shall, in the event of a vacancy or indisposition of an office-bearer, delegate the functions to another Office-Bearer until the vacancy is duly filled or the indisposition ceases."

The elections for these two vacancies arose after Jay Shah vacated the secretary position to assume the role of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) earlier this month. Subsequently, treasurer Ashish Shelar resigned from his position in the BCCI after being appointed as a cabinet minister in the Maharashtra state government.

According to the by-election notification issued by Joti on Saturday evening, the scrutiny of nominations will take place on January 6 from 11 am to 1 pm. Candidates will have the option to withdraw their nominations on January 7 from 11 am to 2 pm. The final candidate list will be announced at 5 pm on the same day. The elections are set for January 12, with results to be declared that same day.

For a nomination to be considered valid, a candidate must: not have reached the age of 70 years, not have been a Minister or Government Servant, and not have been convicted of a criminal offense and sentenced to imprisonment. Additionally, the candidate must confirm that they are not subject to a cooling-off period of three years as per the board's Rules and Regulations, and they should not have served as an Office-bearer of the BCCI for a cumulative total of nine years.

At this time, there has been no conclusive information regarding potential successors for the positions left by Shah and Shelar. However, the issuance of the election notice indicates that there is sufficient time to determine who will be deemed suitable candidates for these two vacant office-bearer roles in the BCCI.
