New Delhi, Feb 8 (NationPress) Rohan Jaitley, the president of the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA), has surfaced as the top candidate for the Joint Secretary role within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The election is set to occur during a Special General Meeting (SGM) on March 1, at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, where Jaitley is favored for the vacant role.
The BCCI has officially notified all state associations regarding the upcoming election, with the appointment of the new Joint Secretary being the primary agenda of the meeting. This position has been vacant since Devajit Saikia's elevation to Secretary after Jay Shah's election as ICC Chairman in December 2024.
The BCCI circulated the SGM notice to the state associations, stating, “Notice is hereby given for a Special General Meeting of the BCCI which will be conducted at 12:00 PM IST on March 1, at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, to conduct the Election and Induction of the Joint Secretary of BCCI,” the apex board conveyed in a statement.
This marks the second SGM in under two months, following the previous gathering on January 12, where Saikia was elected as Secretary and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia as Treasurer. Both were elected without opposition.
Jaitley’s main challengers for this position include former Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Abhishek Dalmiya and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official Sanjay Naik. Nevertheless, Jaitley is currently perceived as the most formidable candidate due to his administrative prowess and increasing influence within the governing body of Indian cricket.
Saikia, who previously served as Joint Secretary, advanced to Secretary last month after Shah vacated that role. The election on March 1 will be the second SGM in less than two months, following the previous one on January 12, where Saikia and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia were elected as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively, unopposed.
If elected, Jaitley’s appointment would further reinforce his position in Indian cricket administration. The Joint Secretary plays a critical role in managing various administrative responsibilities and collaborating closely with other board members to guarantee the effective functioning of the BCCI. His potential election is timely as the board gears up for significant international tournaments and domestic cricket reforms.
