India pushing for 2036 Olympics hosting, says PM Modi in Chennai
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 11 October reaffirmed India's ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games, saying the country was actively moving forward with the bid while also preparing to stage the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. Speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya in Chennai, Modi expressed confidence that India's youth would carry the nation to new heights in international sport.
What Modi Said
'India is preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. We are also moving forward with the dream of hosting the 2036 Olympics,' Modi told the gathering. He added that when the world's biggest sporting events are held in India, the country's youth would have 'a platform, potential and support' to pursue their sporting ambitions.
'Every youngster has their own unique dreams and talents. This is why the country is ensuring that sports should not be limited to entertainment only,' Modi said, noting that young players were already receiving improved training and institutional backing.
India's 2036 Olympic Bid: Where It Stands
India is one of seven interested parties currently in dialogue with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over the right to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The other parties in contention are Germany, Hungary, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, and Türkiye. India formally entered the process by submitting a Letter of Intent to the IOC's Future Host Commission on 1 October 2024.
The IOC has outlined a multi-stage selection process. Its Executive Board is expected to shortlist interested parties for the next stage by March 2027, with the final host city to be elected by IOC members in mid-2029.
Commonwealth Games 2030 as a Stepping Stone
India's preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad are seen as a critical rehearsal for the larger Olympic ambition. Successfully staging the Commonwealth Games would offer India the operational experience, infrastructure upgrades, and global visibility needed to strengthen its Olympic case before the IOC makes its shortlisting decision in early 2027. Notably, India has not hosted the Commonwealth Games since New Delhi 2010.
Modi's Chennai Engagements
The Prime Minister was in Chennai on Sunday for a series of engagements beyond the school function. Earlier in the day, Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay flagged off the first train on the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II network, travelling on the inaugural service from Porur to Poonamallee. The visit also included the inauguration of several development projects in Tamil Nadu.
What It Means for Indian Sport
Hosting the Olympics would be a transformational moment for Indian sport, requiring world-class venues, athlete infrastructure, and logistical capacity at a scale the country has never attempted. Proponents argue it would accelerate investment in grassroots sport and medal-winning pathways. Critics, however, point to cost overruns at past Games globally and the need for transparent planning if India's bid advances past the 2027 shortlist stage. The next concrete milestone is the IOC Executive Board's shortlisting decision, expected by March 2027.
