New Delhi, Sep 15 (NationPress) Former England midfielder Danny Murphy contends that the challenges facing Manchester United stem not from the tactics employed by head coach Ruben Amorim, but rather from the players at his disposal.
The Red Devils found themselves outmatched at the Etihad Stadium, where Phil Foden scored in the first half and Erling Haaland netted two goals in the second half, leading to a decisive victory for Pep Guardiola's team.
"While I'm not particularly fond of the formation, I have noticed improvements after the initial four matches - they appear to be more coordinated. Their major issue lies with the players executing the strategy. Bruno Fernandes, known as one of the top number 10s in Europe, is expected to perform as an 8 and handle defensive duties, which is not his strong suit.
"Amorim cannot fit round pegs into square holes. It's essential to have players who comprehend their roles. A holding midfielder must be adept at tracking opponents and identifying threats.
"While the manager must accept some accountability, placing all the blame on the system is misguided. Crystal Palace executes it effectively," Murphy remarked on BBC Match of the Day.
After finishing 15th in the 2024-25 Premier League season, United has once again stumbled out of the gate in the current campaign. Having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the second round by Grimsby Town, the Red Devils have managed to win just one of their four league matches this season.
Despite the 0-3 loss, Amorim remains committed to his football philosophy.
"I recognize and accept that this is not an acceptable record for Manchester United. There are numerous factors at play that you might not be aware of, but I refuse to alter my approach. If I decide to modify my philosophy, I will do so; otherwise, it’s time to change the personnel," said Amorim during the post-match interview.
